My Sheep Hear My Voice

By Tobias Onyango

Hearing the voice of God is a very important key that is tethered to our destiny. Remember the bible says:

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations” (Jeremiah 1:5)

For I know the thoughts that I think towards you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope” (Jeremiah 29:11)

Wow! And do you wonder to know how many are these thoughts of God towards you?

How precious are your thoughts about me O God. They cannot be numbered! I Can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand! ” (Psalms 119:17-18, NLT)

Many, O LORD my God, are Your wonderful works which You have done; And Your thoughts toward us cannot be recounted to You in order; If I would declare and speak of them, They are more than can be numbered ”(Psalms 40:5).

How long shall we continue to live in poor perception about ourselves as children of God yet His plans towards us are too many even to count. All these plans were created for us to walk in them. Gideon also suffered from the same disease of poor perception. He looked down upon himself when the angel of the Lord appeared to him to go and save the children of Israel. He said “But Lord how can I rescue Israel? My clan is the weakest in the whole tribe of Manasseh and I am the least in my entire family!” (Judges 6:15).

Yet the angel of the LORD addressed him as a ‘Mighty man of Valor’. It means God was looking at him through totally different lenses compared to the ones he was using himself. I want to put on God’s lenses to change how I see myself. The voice of God that he heard was his destiny that he walked in throughout the whole of his lifetime. In fact, all the people in the bible their destinies and assignments came first by hearing the voice of God. God spoke to Abraham, Isaac, Moses, Jacob and throughout the entire bible we see a lot of instances of God speaking. Well, the bible says that God is the same yesterday, today and forever. That makes me understand that He still speaks today.

All of our lives are written in His book in heaven. How we would live every day and every second is jotted down to the smallest details. Yet God wants us to partner with Him. He never created us as robots to force His will on us and this is His demonstration of love. Choose to partner with Him and make His journal to be your journey. Inquire of Him what your life purpose is and what He intended you to accomplish in this earth. And that is why we have His precious Holy Spirit to direct us step by step according to the will of God in accomplishing His purpose on earth. This makes me understand that the Christian life is tethered totally on hearing the voice of God. How can He guide us if we cannot discern His voice? Jesus said “Most assuredly I say to you, the son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the son does in the like manner. (John 5:19 NKJV) : “When you lift up the son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and that I can do nothing of Myself; but as My Father taught Me, I speak these things”(John 8:28 NKJV)

Jesus lived constantly to the smallest detailed under the will of God. Jesus could speak nothing of Himself unless the Father told Him to. What a total dependence! He walked in a capacity to hear Him who sent Him and to do His will. How then can we learn to walk the way Jesus walked in constantly hearing the voice of God. Jesus said My Father has been working and so is the Son. It also means that the Father has also been speaking to us yet we do not get to hear Him. The problem is solely on our side. In tuning a radio channel, as long as there is poor connection you can never get the message of what is being spoken about. We are so busy with our lives and entangled with a lot of things that we forget to tune in to the voice of God and listen to what He is saying because He has always been speaking.

We spend a lot of time on social media, on TV, Sports and some other stuff which have got eternal value on our lives and all these things which sometimes seem good distract us from hearing Him. The bible makes us understand that God is always with us. Everywhere we think that we can ever be, He is always there and this is the key to listening to His voice. Some struggle to hear His voice yet that is not supposed to be the case. Start to walk in the consciousness of His presence and you will begin to hear His voice. Let us consider the following instances from the bible

“And the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush. So he looked and behold the bush was burning with fire, yet the bush was not consumed. Then Moses said I will now turn aside and see this great sight, why the bush does not burn. So when the LORD saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush and said…” (Exodus 3:3-4 NKJV). Immediately Moses was aware of the Presence of God and turned to look, then God called out his name. Amazing. The same way if we walk in consciousness of His presence always around us, we will start to hear Him call out our name. It might not be literal but we will sense the gentle draw of His spirit on our hearts. That is His voiceHere is another example

“Therefore Eli said to Samuel, Go, lie down and it shall be , if He calls you, that you must say, Speak for your servant hears. So Samuel went and lay down in his place, now the LORD came and stood and called as the other times, Samuel, Samuel! And Samuel answered, Speak for your servant hears. Then the LORD said to Samuel...”(1 Samuel 3:9-11 NKJV) We see that despite the fact that Samuel was hearing the voice call his name in the previous instances, God did not speak to him until he recognized His presence. Until we walk in the consciousness of His presence with us we will struggle to know if He is really speaking to us.

These above examples clearly show us that God takes pleasure in revealing His will for us that we may walk in. Jesus said “it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom” (Luke 12:32 NKJV). He yearns to show us what His kingdom is like so that we bring it here on earth. So let us go boldly to Him without fear.
